After a terrible defeat in the spring of 1940, the 1st Division of Free France (1st DFL) was formed in the Middle East from volunteers coming from England, all colonies and escaping from the humiliated and enslaved homeland. Her men, despite the seeming hopelessness of the situation and the risk that threatened them and their families at home, violated traditional principles of discipline and raised their weapons against the enemy at a time when the defeat of Germany was a mere illusion. In the book, the author describes the combat journey of this division, which led from Eritrea through Syria, Egypt, Tunisia and Italy to his native France, and its difficult existence within the British army.
